How the UK Lotto draw works

A UK Lotto draw takes 6 main numbers from a pool of 1 to 59. A seventh ball, the Bonus Ball, is then drawn from the same pool and only affects the Match 5 + Bonus tier.

Matching 2 numbers wins a free Lucky Dip rather than cash, which is why the published odds of 'winning something' are far shorter than the odds of winning money.

Hot, overdue and random — what they actually mean

Hot weights the numbers drawn most often in the recorded history. Overdue favours the numbers that have gone longest without appearing. Random ignores history entirely.

All three produce a valid UK Lotto line, and none of them is more likely to win than any other. A draw has no memory: a number that has not appeared for a year is exactly as likely as one drawn last week.

Every combination is equally likely on every draw, and past results do not change what comes next. Hot, overdue and random are three ways of choosing numbers — none of them improves your odds. Lotteries pay out less than they take in, so treat this as entertainment rather than a strategy.
