A Powerball draw takes 5 main numbers from a pool of 1 to 69, then a single Powerball from a separate pool of 1 to 26. The Powerball can repeat a main number, because the two pools are independent.
The advertised jackpot is an annuity paid over 29 years. The lump sum is substantially smaller, and US federal and state tax is withheld before anything reaches a winner.
Hot weights the numbers drawn most often in the recorded history. Overdue favours the numbers that have gone longest without appearing. Random ignores history entirely.
All three produce a valid US Powerball line, and none of them is more likely to win than any other. A draw has no memory: a number that has not appeared for a year is exactly as likely as one drawn last week.
Every combination is equally likely on every draw, and past results do not change what comes next. Hot, overdue and random are three ways of choosing numbers — none of them improves your odds. Lotteries pay out less than they take in, so treat this as entertainment rather than a strategy.
